Composer Fred Lerdahl will discuss his work with the Pro Musica audience in a special appearance on the last concert of the 2011-2012 season. Mr. Lerdahl is Fritz Reiner Professor of Music at Columbia University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and has twice been finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in music. Among his other honors are the Koussevitzky Composition Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Classical Recording Foundations Composer of the Year Award.
The Daedalus Quartet* will perform a program that includes works by Mr. Lerdahl, including his Third String Quartet, which was commissioned for the Daedalus Quartet by Chamber Music America. Praised by The New Yorker as a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets, the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In the ten years of its existence the Daedalus Quartet has received plaudits from critics and listeners alike for the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances.
In the fall of 2011, The Daedalus Quartet will record the complete string quartets of Fred Lerdahl on the Bridge label.
